Wolff pours cold water on Verstappen-Mercedes speculation

Jun.9 (GMM) Toto Wolff has offered perhaps the clearest sign yet that Mercedes may no longer be actively pursuing Max Verstappen.

While Verstappen continues to be linked with a future move away from Red Bull, Mercedes’ dominant start to 2026 has been driven by the stunning rise of runaway championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

After the teenager’s latest victory in Monaco stretched his advantage over teammate George Russell to 68 points, Wolff sounded fully committed to his current lineup.

“I can’t imagine a better driver pairing than the one we currently have,” the Mercedes boss told Bild.

Wolff also urged observers to ease the pressure surrounding Antonelli’s meteoric rise. “Let’s just enjoy the carefree performances of one of the greatest talents I have ever seen,” he told Blick.

The Austrian said the 19-year-old has quickly become one of Formula 1’s biggest stars.

“After Lewis, we now have a new global rock star at Mercedes,” said Wolff.

“He thrills the masses. From young to old. It doesn’t matter what gender is cheering him on.”

Asked whether the growing fame could become a problem, Wolff laughed: “Yes, we can’t go out to eat in a restaurant together anymore.

“Immediately, lines of autograph hunters form. Then there’s no peace and quiet.”

Verstappen has been linked with Mercedes for several years, and reports continue to suggest the Dutchman could trigger a Red Bull exit clause if he is outside the top two in the championship at the summer break.

However, with Antonelli flourishing, Wolff appears keen to keep attention away from both title talk and driver market speculation.

Antonelli’s father Marco is taking a similarly cautious approach.

“We’re taking it race by race,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We’ll focus on the World Championship with three Grands Prix to go, not before.”

He also warned against comparisons with Verstappen.

“Max is a nice guy with a friendly character,” Marco Antonelli said, according to the Dutch publication Formule 1.

“But it is still too early to compare Kimi with Max.

“Max is already a four-time world champion, whereas Kimi still has a long way to go to achieve what Max has already accomplished.

“I hope he comes close to that someday, but at this stage of his career, Max is primarily an example for him.”

He revealed that the two drivers have built a close relationship.

“Max and Kimi speak to each other almost every weekend,” said Antonelli. “He is a friend of ours – we both run a Mercedes GT3 team as well,” he smiled.

“Of course, there is a clear similarity, but at the same time, it is clear that Max is currently still at a different level as a driver.”
