Jun.5 (GMM) Carlos Sainz has left the door open to future opportunities despite making clear that his preferred path remains staying at Williams long term.
The Spaniard was responding to recent comments from team boss James Vowles, who said he wants to retain both Sainz and Alex Albon beyond 2026 as Williams continues its rebuilding project.
Sainz welcomed the public vote of confidence.
“I was delighted to hear from James that the team lineup would remain the same,” he said.
“I think we both agreed that this was the ideal scenario. And for me, this is the ideal path – to drive for Williams, watch the team progress, and continue to help it become stronger.”
The former Ferrari driver insists he remains committed to the project despite Williams’ disappointing start to 2026.
“When I agreed to join Williams a couple of years ago, I made a commitment to succeed and I really hope we can do that,” Sainz said.
“Obviously, this year we have encountered a serious problem that we did not expect, and now all my attention and efforts are directed to getting the team out of this crisis as quickly as possible.”
However, the four-time grand prix winner admitted that any driver must consider title-winning opportunities if they arise.
“I was clear back in 2025 when I said that my ideal plan revolved around making Williams champions again,” said Sainz. “It’s my dream, and I’m working towards it.
“I also know that as a driver, I like to win, and I can win both races and World Championships if I have a good car.
“And if opportunities arise, then you should definitely consider them.”
Asked whether rival teams had already made contact regarding 2027, Sainz laughed. “Always, of course, man,” he joked.
Sainz added: “No, I’m not going to comment.
“There are still a few months to go, so we’ll talk in a few months.”
Albon, meanwhile, sounded even more committed to staying.
The Thai-British driver has now made 95 starts for Williams, drawing level with Nigel Mansell’s total for the famous team.
Asked if he would be happy to stay long enough to challenge for titles under Vowles’ target of 2030, Albon’s answer was straightforward. “Yeah, I would,” he said.
“I feel like I’ve been a part of this team since some of the very beginnings of it, even before James. I put so much effort and work into it, I would love to see it through.”
