Jul.8 (GMM) Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed the sport will expand its sprint program from 2027.
The announcement follows confirmation earlier this week that Monza will host sprint weekends for the next three seasons from 2027.
Reports suggest the number of sprint events could increase from the current 6 to as many as 10.
“If you recall the beginning, people were always sceptical of what we were doing,” Domenicali said.
“But I believe we have a responsibility to be bold, to seek new approaches, and not to be afraid to push the envelope.
“I think the effect is already visible.
“With 150,000 spectators in the stands at Silverstone on Friday, it would have been wrong not to offer them the opportunity to see more action on the track.
“That’s why I think sprints are the right way to go.”
Domenicali said the expanded sprint calendar will be unveiled when Formula 1 announces the 2027 schedule.
“We’re already working on announcing more sprints in the future,” he said. “This will happen very soon when we unveil the calendar.

The Italian also indicated the full 2027 calendar will be revealed “very, very soon”, with Portimao set to join and expectations that Istanbul will return to the championship – while Zandvoort drops off the schedule and Barcelona begins a rotation with Spa from 2028.
