Jun.24 (GMM) Zandvoort has already secured a high-profile successor to Formula 1.
As the Dutch circuit prepares to host its final grand prix in August, Formula E has announced it will race at Zandvoort for the first time in 2027.
The move forms part of a broader shift by the electric series towards permanent circuits, with Austin’s Circuit of the Americas and Brands Hatch also joining the schedule.
“Welcoming world-renowned tracks like COTA in Austin, Zandvoort, and Brands Hatch provides the ultimate stage to showcase our new GEN4 era,” said Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo.
Formula E says its new-generation cars, due to debut in 2027, will reach speeds of 335kph and close significantly on Formula 1 performance levels.
The announcement comes just weeks before Formula 1’s final visit to the Dutch seaside venue.
Zandvoort director Robert van Overdijk insists the decision to end the Dutch GP was not driven by finances.
“We can still afford the event,” he said. “It is still a healthy business case.”
“But you also have to look ahead. At some point, you have to ask yourself if the risks still outweigh the benefits. If you can no longer answer that question with ‘yes’, you have to make a business decision,” he explains.
“We have organised six races, have been named Promoter of the Year and have set an event that is seen as a benchmark worldwide. Then you can also conclude that we have nothing more to prove.”
Van Overdijk admitted a future Formula 1 return appears unlikely.
“Never say never,” he said. “But if this event goes away, I honestly don’t expect it to just come back.
“There are now plenty of countries and world cities in line. This will be the last time. And perhaps that is precisely why the most memorable of all.”
