Jul.21 (GMM) Aston Martin has admitted it may have chosen a different engine partner if Honda’s true 2026 performance level had been known in advance.
The striking admission from Mike Krack comes as the team prepares to introduce its first major Adrian Newey-led chassis upgrade in Hungary this weekend, before Honda brings its own revised power unit at Zandvoort.
Aston Martin and Honda began the season with enormous expectations, but the relationship was immediately strained by the car’s lack of performance and Newey’s blunt public criticism of Honda’s preparation and openness.
“Obviously, there was a lot of frustration in Melbourne and some pretty strong comments from Adrian about the situation,” Krack said.
“Perhaps the team would have done things differently, and even chosen other partners, if that level of performance had been known.”
However, Krack says the difficult opening phase ultimately forced Aston Martin and Honda into a much closer working relationship.
“We knew there would be many difficult moments,” he said.
“We had more than one meeting to discuss it, and I think the relationship has improved immensely. Not only between us, Aston and Honda, but also in the garage, in the engineering office, and in all the technical collaboration between Silverstone and Sakura.”
“Believe me, it was tough. It was something we had to go through, and from there things improved.”
Krack said the pressure of trying to rescue the project helped unite both organisations.
“The lack of sleep and the beating we were taking brought us together very quickly. We knew we had done it together and there’s no point in getting frustrated, even though it’s difficult sometimes.”
He believes Aston Martin and Honda must now deal with the setback professionally before analysing what went wrong.
“I think we need to mature, be professional in these situations, and move forward,” said Krack. “If we manage to get back to competing soon, then we can sit down together, review these last six months, and take advantage of all the positive things we’ve learned.”
“Perhaps not directly in the technical aspects, but rather in collaboration and the human side.”
Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe was at Spa, where he met team owner Lawrence Stroll, Newey and chief technical officer Enrico Cardile.
“First, we checked the status of the updates, including the chassis,” Watanabe told as-web.jp. “We also had various discussions regarding 2027.”
“In order to overcome this situation, we need to improve the whole system, not just the power unit, but the chassis as well. However, everyone understands that closing the gap with the top teams will not happen overnight.”
“So, we shared how much progress we have made with this update and what we aim to achieve with the next update. In F1, it is important to fight as one team with the same understanding, so I spoke with not only Stroll, but also Adrian and Enrico yesterday.”
Asked whether Newey had also attended the Belgian GP, Watanabe confirmed: “Yes, he’s here.”
