Jul.24 (GMM) Ferrari has continued its striking run of technical innovation by unveiling another highly distinctive rear wing for the Hungarian GP.
The latest evolution of the so-called ‘Macarena’ concept features small winglets resembling bunny ears on either side, together with a triple-decker cascade in the centre of the assembly.
Auto Motor und Sport says Ferrari has a fundamental packaging advantage over its rivals.
On most cars, the actuator that moves the main flap occupies the central section of the wing. Ferrari places the adjustment mechanism at the outer endplates instead, freeing the middle of the wing for additional aerodynamic elements.
Rival teams were able to use similar central cascades in Monaco only because the straight-line mode was not active on the tight street circuit.
At the Hungaroring, where the wings can be flattened on four sections of the lap, Ferrari can retain the innovative centre section without sacrificing the active-wing function.
Many in the paddock already regard Ferrari as the natural favourite in Hungary because of its grip, traction and strength through slow and medium-speed corners.
“That’s why I’m absolutely watching them in Hungary,” Ralf Schumacher told Sky Deutschland.
Lewis Hamilton, however, believes Mercedes remains the benchmark.
“They won almost all the races,” said the seven time world champion. “They are fast on all types of circuits and also strong in slow corners.”
“In Monaco they were the fastest, so we have to keep in mind that they can be the fastest again this weekend.”
Hamilton also played down suggestions Ferrari’s recent upgrades have completely transformed the car. “Everyone has taken upgrades,” he insisted.
“Our car is not very different from the car we had in Monaco. There are some small, subtle changes, but in the base the car is still comparable.”
Hamilton also remains underwhelmed by his own first half of the season, despite making significant progress compared with 2025.
“I’m not thinking about the second part of the season,” he said.
“The first part of the year was ok, but maybe not above average.”
Meanwhile, Red Bull has brought back its own controversial Macarena wing in Hungary after resolving the mechanical issue that caused failures in Austria and at Silverstone.
“Our rear wing has been validated, so we’ll be back with the Macarena version, which is supposed to be faster,” Isack Hadjar told L’Equipe.
“Plus, it’s a track that suits us better in terms of energy, and it’s a circuit with some fast sections, which suits me very well.”
