Jul.22 (GMM) David Coulthard has reportedly joined Alex Albon’s personal management structure as an experienced adviser and mentor amid growing uncertainty surrounding Williams’ 2027 driver lineup.
Albon will continue to be managed by Jacques Heckstall-Smith through Grip Sports Management, with Coulthard supplementing the existing arrangement rather than taking full control of the driver’s career.
The former McLaren and Red Bull driver is expected to advise Albon on contracts, career decisions, team relationships and the political complexities of Formula 1.
Coulthard and Albon have known each other since the Thai-British driver’s Red Bull period, while Heckstall-Smith is also understood to have a strong relationship with the 13-time grand prix winner.
The new arrangement appeared to be operating informally at Spa, where Coulthard was seen speaking at length with Albon during Friday practice.
Much of the recent attention at Williams has centred on whether Carlos Sainz will remain at Grove, but Albon’s own long-term satisfaction is also becoming increasingly relevant.
Williams appears keen to retain the 30-year-old, although Albon admitted at Spa that the team has fallen behind its midfield rivals during a difficult development phase.
“Just a bit of everything, really,” he said when asked about Williams’ recent problems.
“I think there’s not one specific trend that we’ve seen in the last two races. More than anything, other teams bring upgrades.”
“We had a smaller one in Silverstone. It worked, but you also have to be honest – the gap to the other midfield cars is at such a point that the upgrades we’ve got on the car are bringing performance, but not enough to fight with them.”
Albon nevertheless insisted he remains confident in Williams’ broader direction.
“No,” he said when asked if he had concerns about the medium and long term.
“We’re just behind in terms of where we started the year. We started our updates late.”
“We must have brought fewer upgrades than the other teams around us, so it’s just going through that phase. We are in a rebuilding phase.”
“We have a lot to do.”
“There are a lot of changes happening at the factory as well, and in many ways it’s frustrating, but it’s patience.”
“There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, and all for the good, but at the same time, unfortunately, it does feel like some of the upgrades and the processes take a little bit longer.”
Williams is preparing a lighter ‘B’ specification for Baku, although – like Sainz – Albon played down expectations that it will immediately transform the car.
“Not so much,” he said when asked how heavily Williams’ future development depends on the package.
“I think the biggest thing for us is to be on weight. I think that’s been a big talking point for us, and we know that’s the goal of that upgrade for the most part.”
“There are still some other areas. We know even on just pure downforce we’re not matching other teams as well, so we still need to work on that.”
Albon said Williams has already begun shifting attention “quite early” to the 2027 car.
“That’s not to say that we’ll leave this car behind, but we are thinking long-term as well, for the best of the team.”
Interestingly, the change to Albon’s advisory structure follows a setback on his side of the Williams garage.
Tom Hart had reportedly been preparing to leave Red Bull and become Albon’s race engineer, but Laurent Mekies convinced him to remain in Milton Keynes as the planned successor to Max Verstappen’s engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.
