Jul.8 (GMM) Fresh reports in the Netherlands suggest tensions between Max Verstappen and Red Bull are escalating, with both sides growing increasingly frustrated as uncertainty over the Dutchman’s future drags on.
The relationship has deteriorated amid Red Bull’s disappointing 2026 campaign, with Verstappen left furious after Silverstone about performance, reliability and the team’s refusal to follow his preferred strategy before the British GP.
According to De Limburger, Verstappen can activate an exit clause after the Hungarian GP and may delay a final decision until as late as October.
The newspaper claims Red Bull’s shareholders, including Mark Mateschitz, are becoming increasingly unhappy with Verstappen’s refusal to commit his future, viewing the situation as a lack of loyalty.
From Verstappen’s side, however, those close to the four-time world champion reportedly believe he is no longer being listened to by the team, pointing to Red Bull’s decision not to fit a fresh power unit and start from the pitlane at Silverstone despite his wishes.
De Telegraaf journalist Erik van Haren says the growing uncertainty is creating tension on both sides.
“The Red Bull side very much wants an answer from Verstappen,” he said on the newspaper’s podcast.
“I don’t want to say they’re begging, but they want to know if he’s staying for Red Bull next year. They have wanted that answer for a long time.”
Van Haren says Verstappen is in no rush to provide it.
“Verstappen says: no, I’m not in a hurry, I’m not saying that yet. Of course, that also creates resentment.”
He believes Red Bull still has reasons for optimism, including its improving Ford-backed power unit and a new wind tunnel due next year.
“Red Bull see it quite positively,” Van Haren said. “Verstappen is just looking at the other side. He’s not that positive.”
The journalist added that the central issue is no longer outright performance, but trust.
“The only reason for Verstappen to leave Red Bull is if there were a breach of trust or that he has no or not enough faith in the people who are sitting there now.
“I don’t know if that’s the case.”
Van Haren also noted that while McLaren remains among the teams linked with Verstappen, its own form has dipped, and any move would involve weighing significant advantages against potential drawbacks.
It is also believed that Oscar Piastri has an exit clause of his own around the summer break, with his current P6 in the championship potentially bringing it into play.
