Horner rumours linger as ‘much better’ Aston runs

Jul.25 (GMM) Adrian Newey hopes Aston Martin’s radically overhauled car has finally ended the “complete nightmare” of its disastrous start to the 2026 season.

The heavily revised chassis debuted in Hungary with 16 separate changes listed in the FIA documentation, covering almost every major aerodynamic area of the car.

“Hopefully, yes,” Newey said when asked whether Friday marked the end of the nightmare and the beginning of a new phase.

“The first races have been a complete nightmare, you’re absolutely right. Hopefully, we can get at least a point and respectability now.

“I think that is the immediate goal. From there, we can try to keep moving forward.”

Fernando Alonso offered an encouraging first assessment of the package.

“The car feels more planted and is easier to drive, allowing you to better control its grip in corners,” said the Spaniard, opening by describing the car as “much better”.

“It’s more predictable. I think we can fight with other cars.

“Obviously, we need to study the data more and make comparisons, but I don’t think there will be any big surprises or a significant deficit in the corners compared to the top of the midfield.”

“That is, obviously, our primary ambition, to be at the top of the midfield. Obviously, we still have some steps to take regarding the chassis and also the engine.”

The Spaniard, who turns 45 next week, also played down the reappearance of vibrations from the Honda power unit during opening practice.

“I think the guys sorted it out more or less by FP2, so there’s no cause for concern tomorrow,” he revealed.

However, Lance Stroll’s first day with the new car ended early after a suspension failure.

Aston Martin lacked the spare components required to complete repairs before the second session, with replacements being flown from the factory overnight.

“Due to a lack of parts, we weren’t able to repair Lance’s car in time, but he will be back on track on Saturday,” team representative Pedro de la Rosa said.

Newey also addressed renewed speculation linking his former Red Bull boss Christian Horner with Aston Martin.

“I keep hearing these rumours about Christian,” he said. “I can’t comment further.

“I don’t really know anything about that. All I can say is that we’re very happy with our senior management team.

“We may do some minor tweaks, but the personnel we have at AMR, we’re very happy with.”

Newey was more decisive about Alonso’s future, after the two-time champion said on Thursday he already has a contract for 2027 and would not move elsewhere.

“Obviously, Fernando is an amazing driver,” Newey said.

“He brings huge amounts to the team, both in his feedback and his ability. So, for us, of course it’s important.”

“I’m pretty confident that Fernando is enjoying his time with us and that we will continue with our relationship.”
