Norris suggests Verstappen ‘wants’ McLaren switch

Jul.3 (GMM) The Max Verstappen-to-McLaren saga continued to dominate discussion at Silverstone on Thursday, with the Dutchman, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri all weighing in on the latest speculation.

After days of reports suggesting Verstappen’s management explored the possibility of a move to Woking, the four-time world champion again refused to fuel the rumours.

“I’m not going to talk about this,” Verstappen told Dutch reporters at Silverstone.

“I’ve said before what I wanted to say. If I have something new to report or if something changes, you will hear it from me and not from someone else who writes about it.”

Instead, he again pointed to Red Bull’s notable progress in Austria last weekend.

“We’re on the way back, so that’s very good to see,” said Verstappen. “I have had a very positive weekend in Austria.

“We’re just trying to improve further from that point.”

Norris, meanwhile, suggested Verstappen is not the only rival interested in McLaren. “To be honest, a lot of drivers want to come to McLaren,” the reigning world champion said.

“I don’t know why you just highlight Max. There are quite a few others that I know that want to come as well.

“It’s a cool thing that a four-time world champion wants to come on board and wants to potentially join the team. I don’t know how much of it’s true, but it’s a cool thing.”

However, the Briton stressed he is fully committed to McLaren alongside Piastri. “It’s not a serious thing,” he said. “I’m also just excited for my future with McLaren.

“I’m still going to be here for many, many more years. Me and Oscar are working very well together and we’re excited to work together for more years too.”

Norris also backed himself against Verstappen in equal machinery.

“I do believe I can beat any driver,” he said.

“What makes Max so incredible is how he is over the course of the season, every single weekend, performing to the level that he does.

“I believe whether it’s him or having a chance to go against Lewis or Fernando, any of the people that are some of the best, I think it’s a cool opportunity for me.”

Piastri, whose own future has been questioned if Verstappen did arrive at McLaren, also appeared relaxed.

“For me, it doesn’t mean much,” the Australian, linked with a direct swap with Verstappen at Red Bull, said.

“Max is the talent he is and looks around. I’m very happy with where I am.

“I have been told several times that the team is happy with me and I trust them. I also have a contract, so nothing changes for me.”
