Jun.5 (GMM) Fernando Alonso appears to have ended his media standoff with Spanish broadcaster DAZN after the return of partner Melissa Jimenez from maternity leave.
The Aston Martin driver had reportedly stopped giving interviews to the network after an on-air mistake involving the name of the couple’s newborn son, Leonard.
Spanish outlet Diario Sport reports that tensions emerged after a member of the travelling DAZN team incorrectly reported the baby’s name, prompting frustration within Alonso’s inner circle.
The controversy led to speculation of a breakdown in relations between Alonso and the broadcaster.
According to sources cited by the publication, Alonso made it clear he would only resume speaking to DAZN once Jimenez returned to her reporting role.
That happened this week as the journalist rejoined the network ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix following several months of maternity leave.
Jimenez, who shares son Leonard with Alonso, returned to work at one of the most high-profile events on the calendar, held in the city where the couple resides.
The timing also comes as Aston Martin unveiled a special Monaco livery, although Alonso is keeping expectations firmly in check on track.
The 44-year-old Spaniard does not expect the Silverstone-based team to challenge for points this weekend despite the unique nature of the Monte Carlo circuit.
“Looking at the first few races, I’d say there’s no chance of scoring points,” Alonso said.
“I think the top 10 cars and the top five teams are quite a bit ahead of the rest.”
