Jan.26 (GMM) Flavio Briatore has admitted he personally drove Alpine’s decision to abandon its Renault works engine program in favour of Mercedes power for 2026 – a stance that contrasts with his public denials last season.
Speaking to Sky Italia at the launch of Alpine’s A526 in Barcelona, Briatore was unequivocal when asked about his role in the change.
“How much of my influence was involved in the decision to switch from Renault to Mercedes engines? One hundred percent,” Briatore said.
“I can’t blame anyone – in fact, I have to say I received great support from Luca de Meo. He understood that I was right.
“I would never have returned to Formula 1 if I hadn’t had the opportunity to have an engine on par with the top teams,” he added.
Alpine will begin running its 2026 car from the opening phase of the Barcelona group test, following an extensive winter program after a difficult 2025 season. The team is also using Mercedes gearboxes as part of the new technical partnership.
Driver Pierre Gasly said simply getting the car on track early was already valuable under the radically revised regulations.
“It’s a good sign, that’s clear,” Gasly told AS. “At this point, every lap with these cars is very valuable because the engine and chassis are so different. We’re starting from scratch, and there’s a lot to learn – for us as drivers.”
“We’ll have to reset our benchmarks,” he added, “and it’s good to be able to start running earlier.”
Gasly suggested Alpine’s expectations have shifted accordingly, hinting that the team’s ceiling in 2026 will be higher than in recent seasons.
“It depends on the cars that are ready in Australia,” he said, smiling when asked whether simply escaping Q1 would still define success.
