Jun.12 (GMM) Esteban Ocon’s Formula 1 future may be under increasing pressure from Ferrari junior Rafael Camara.
While many paddock observers have linked Toyota-backed Jack Doohan with a possible Haas seat in 2027, Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport believes technical partner Ferrari has other plans.
According to correspondent Tobias Gruner, Ferrari is already looking at ways to place its highly-rated Brazilian academy driver on the Formula 1 grid.
“Many experts currently consider Rafael Camara to be the greatest talent in the junior racing series,” Gruner wrote.
The 21-year-old won last year’s Formula 3 title and has made an immediate impression since stepping up to Formula 2.
“In Maranello, they apparently believe that the young driver from their own junior program is ready to make the leap to Formula 1,” Gruner added.
With Charles Leclerc recently signing a new contract and Lewis Hamilton suggesting he has no intention to retire, Ferrari’s own race seats are unavailable.
That naturally points toward Haas, Ferrari’s long-standing technical partner, which is already accommodating the impressive Ferrari junior Oliver Bearman.
“Camara would also like to spend a few years learning the ropes at Haas,” Gruner reported.
The obstacle is Ocon.
The Frenchman was recruited to bring experience and leadership to Haas, but his position no longer looks secure.
“Team principal Ayao Komatsu did express some mild criticism of the Frenchman during the winter break,” Gruner noted. “They were not satisfied with his performance last year.”
The report says Ocon’s struggles have continued into 2026, although bad luck has also played a role.
“This season, Ocon hasn’t done much to justify his continued employment,” Gruner wrote. “He only managed a meagre 3 points across the first six race weekends.”
Finances could also become a factor.
“Ocon is considered the highest-paid driver the North Carolina-based team has ever had,” Gruner reported. “A rookie like Camara would definitely be significantly cheaper.”
