Freddy was a racer through and through. He was an apprentice at Bentley Motors as a mechanic, and he was a member of the works Austin team that won the Brooklands 500 in 1930. He created his own team of MG Midgets in 1931 and won the Brooklands double twelve race. Freddie, also known as Frederick Charles Gordon-Lennox, 9th Duke of Richmond, 9th Duke of Lennox, 9th Duke of Aubigny (a French noble title), and 4th Duke of Gordon. Freddie was Lord March’s grandfather and was the man who was responsible for building the circuit on the Goodwood estate in 1948.
The Goodwood circuit has a total length of 2.4 miles or 3.8 kilometers. There are just 7 turns on this historic track; 5 to the right and 2 to the left. The circuit is located on a plateau on the Goodwood estate making the course exceedingly flat. Perhaps one of the most distinctive features is the chicane located just after the Woodcote right hander at the end of the lap. First introduced in 1952 the chicane certainly adds to the excitement of the race and places a premium a driver ability.
Between 1948 and 1966, Goodwood was a major circuit competing with the likes of Brands Hatch and Silverstone as the best circuit in the United Kingdom. Still the same as it was in the 1960’s it is fitting that the cars are all from the same era as well. That said, most of the drivers are from that vintage also. Drivers such as John Surtees, Derek Bell, David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Gerhard Berger, Martin Brundle, Bobby Rahal, Johnny Herbert, Wayne Gardner, Giacomo Agostini, Jean Alesi, and Barry Sheene, as well as celebrities such as Chris Rea and Rowan Atkinson (as Mr. Bean).
