Suzuka is home to the Japanese Grand Prix, a track built in 1962 as a test track by Honda. They commissioned John “Hans” Hugenholtz to design the track that is managed by Mobilityland Corporation, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company. The circuit has a figure-eight configuration and is certainly amongst the best circuits in the world.
Viewing is exceptional; even with a general admission ticket, you can find some great viewing points. The curves two through to seven are wonderful areas to watch from; they are incredibly difficult. Drivers who get curve two or three wrong, even just a little off line, have difficulty with the rest of the section.
In seasons 1988 through 1990, Suzuka was the final race in the year and during that time was also the deciding race for the World Champion. The Prost and Senna saga was infamous and the driving very questionable. However, space does not allow a blow-by-blow description, but it was far greater than any teammate feud in recent years, like the Hamilton and Rosberg or Webber and Vettel fights.
While the race is not usually a title event, it is still worth a trip. The teams and sponsors have the good hotels in Suzuka tied up for years. However, Nagoya is a great place to visit, and the 30 or so miles to Suzuka go by quickly enough, which is interesting in itself.
The Hilton Nagoya hotel is ideally located in the Fushimi district, Nagoya's shopping, entertainment and business center. Each spacious and modern guest room features contemporary furnishings, a Hilton Serenity bed, an LCD TV and a work space with large desk and high-speed internet access. Special touches include a full range of luxury amenities including a hair dryer, coffee maker, air conditioning, mini bar, soft bathrobes, Japanese yukata (cotton kimono), slippers and reading materials.
When you're not out enjoying the F1 action, make use of the complimentary shuttle service to Nagoya Station and discover local Nagoya attractions, rent a bicycle to explore the city, take a swim in the indoor pool or work out in the onsite fitness center. A sauna, spa and whirlpool are also available.
Nagoya is the third largest city in Japan. It is located on the Pacific coast and is one of Japan's major ports. There is a population of 2.27 million and is the third largest metropolitan area in Japan with a population of 10 million. The city is home to the Toyota company, the largest auto manufacturer in World, and Mitsubishi a massive Conglomerate that makes everything from aircraft to refrigerators plus cutting edge electronics and auto manufacturing, to name just a few. Toyota has a museum, although their early cars are rather mundane, while some of their later cars are exciting.
With such industry, they have built the infrastructure to offer many tourist attractions. Opened in 2011, Railway Park is the railway museum that includes world record setting experimental bullet train and the latest magnetic levitating trains (maglev).
The Tokugawa Art Museum was built on the grounds of the Owari's former feudal residence. Many exhibits of their treasures include; samurai armor and swords, tea utensils, noh masks and costumes, poems, scrolls and maps.
Nagoya Castle was built around 1600 as the seat of one of the three branches of the ruling Tokugawa family, the Owari branch. The castle's former palace buildings are currently being reconstructed next to the main keep until spring 2018. It does not greatly impact a visit to the castle.
If you are a connoisseur of Japanese food, there are many local Nagoya specialties that follow their own unique style and have the familiar feeling of hearty comfort foods. A wide variety of restaurants can be found around the city, especially around Nagoya Station, and along the city's various shopping arcades.
Race tickets are not included with your hotel package. Please check the "Race Tickets" tab for ticket options.
