Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the World. Taking place during two weeks in late June and early July each year. It is the major tournament of the four Grand Slam series.

The inaugural lawn tennis championship was played in 1877 is the oldest tournament in tennis, and is still played on grass. Wimbledon is full of pomp and ceremony with a tradition that includes a strict dress code for competitors and has Royal patronage to seal its importance. Notably Wimbledon does not allow sponsorship and there is no advertising around the hallowed courts.

Professionals were not allowed to play in the Championship until 1968 when Rod Laver won the first open Wimbledon. It is certainly one of the biggest sporting events in England and with Andy Murray winning the 2016 men`s championship. The 2017 Wimbledon Open promises to be an enormous event with its current British Champion defending his title.

Briton left the European Union in 2016 and seems set for a period of sporting nationalism. They came away from Rio with the second largest trove of medals in the Olympic Games and Paralympics`. The Tour de France was won by Brit Chris Froome a three time winner, and of course Andy Murray won his second Wimbledon men`s title. The champions are lauded by the daily newspapers and become heroes to the masses.

Everyone in the UK seems to be sports mad with city gents, giving up their bowlers for crash helmets, and stockbrokers leaving their limos at home, to race to work on bikes. Discussion on emails always starts with an improvement on their ride time, "can you believe I knocked 6 seconds off my ride time this morning".
