For the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the home of the Italian Grand Prix is located near the town of Monza, just north of Milan. Built in a woodland setting in the Royal Monza park, the circuit features the infamous Curva di Lesmo, CurvaParabolica, and the VarianteAscari. The high speed curve, Curva Grande, is located after the VarianteAscari, but usually taken flat out by Grand Prix cars. The circuit`s biggest event is the Formula One Italian Grand Prix, having hosted the event since the sport`s inception, and is known as the home of the Tifosi, supporters of Italian Grand Prix team Scuderia Ferrari. Monza stands alone as the only true low down force circuit which brings plenty of technical variation from team to team. Wing angle is high priority here, trying to strip off as much drag as possible, with teams at the extreme end of the spectrum.

For our fellow car enthusiasts who eat, sleep and breath anything and everything car related, don`t forget about the Italian Extravaganza. Go behind-the-scenes on a private tour of the Dallara, Lamborghini and Pagani factories and view collections that are out of this world!

RACE OVERVIEW

Italian Grand Prix
It is twice the size of Central Park in New York and has a Royal Villa built in 1777. The Royal Villa has had a checkered history of Kings and Royals from nearby countries winning the right to the Royal Villa by conquest. Even Napoleon laid claim to it as his Italian Palace after he conquered Italy. The Royal Villa is now offices for several government departments.

L`Autodromo Nazionale di Monza is within the park and home to the Italian Grand Prix at the moment. There is always an argument with F1 Management about contracts; this year is no different with threat of the Grand Prix going to Mugello near Florence or Imola near Bologna. All the locations are magnificent, but it depends who will pay the biggest fee to have the race.

The race track is a permanent facility built in 1922 similar to Brooklands and Indianapolis. It has a history of tragedy with 27 spectators killed in 1928 causing the track to close for three years. Monza`s banking was dangerous and several drivers were killed over the years. Count Wolfgang von Trips went off the road in 1961 killing himself and 14 spectators. Von Trips was Phil Hills Ferrari team mate and Phil knew nothing about the tragedy until after the race. He became World Championship by winning. Losing a friend and team mate made the championship pale by the tragedy of the accident.

Until the past twenty years Grand Prix Racing has had a very close association with death. It was Ernest Hemingway who said: "There were only three sports, bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games". Now thankfully Formula 1 is closer to a game.
