Formula 1 fans have the great advantage of combining a race and vacation in one package but not all Formula 1 races balance this equation equally. Let`s be honest - the Monaco Grand Prix is more about Monaco and less about Grand Prix. On the other hand, the Belgium Grand Prix is ALL about racing. The F1 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona balances this mix perfectly. It`s a fun race in a fun city giving you an all-around fun vacation!

Spanish Grand Prix--Tickets and Hospitality--Track Transfers

You can spend a full day looking at the Sagrada Familia basilica, still not finished after 130 years and financed by private donations. The wonders of Gaudi`s work span the city using nature as its primary influence. Your hotel is central to Gaudi`s work and the Las Ramblas entertainment.

Enough about the city - lets talk about the Spanish Grand Prix! Catalunya is a fantastic track. The drivers know it well since it is a winter test track which makes for some great racing. The view is unbeatable - you can see about 1/3 of the track from anywhere you sit.

The Spanish Grand Prix is a win-win for everyone!!

    RACE OVERVIEW

    Spanish Grand Prix
Taking the top three places in the Inaugural Spanish Grand Prix, the team led by Marquis of Salamanca the RR importer from Madrid, won the race at 87 kph. The race was 309 km in length using public roads from Guadarrama, on the road to Valladolid, and crossing the steep Navacerrada Mountain. Three by one hundred kilometers laps on a rough and grueling road, caused many repairs to be carried out. So they dug pits on the side of the road so mechanics could work underneath the cars. This was the first Spanish Grand Prix in 1913, and very different than today. Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya promotes the Spanish Grand Prix today, but you will not find pits dug in the pristine garages that are still called pits.

During the first half of the century, Grands Prix was a hit and miss affair, there was WWI, the Wall St Crash, a recession, promoters in financial difficulties, the Spanish Civil War and WWII, making racing take a back seat. Spain only returned to the Grand Prix calendar a couple of times until 1951, when the F1 formula brought back the Grand Prix cars to the Pedralbes circuit. Then came the 1955 Le Mans tragedy, the scheduled Spanish Grand Prix was cancelled and the pedestrian-lined street track at Pedralbes was then never used again for motor racing.

The government stepped in and built the Jarama circuit near Madrid which alternated with Montjuic a street circuit in Barcelona. Safety was an issue in Barcelona with the barriers not being safe. The drivers refused to race and the organizer threatened to lock the cars inside the local stadium. The drivers relented and the race took place. After 26 laps four spectators were killed by an errant car and the race was stopped-never to return.

Jerez took over the race for a few years but didn`t attract large enough crowds. So a new location in Barcelona was developed to coincide with the Olympics Games. Circuit de Catalunya first race was in 1991 and now the Spanish Grand Prix has a permanent home, near the incredible city of Barcelona.
