Monaco Grand Prix
Since the inaugural Grand Prix the cars have changed the most, with the French Bugatti`s giving way to the golden era of the Silver Arrows that dominated until 1937. The front engine cars of the 1940`s and 50`s ruled the roost until the rear engine gained the upper hand and brought in commercialism by way of sponsorship in the late 1960`s. Gone are the Counts, Marques, Barons, Lords, Viscounts and Princes who were the only drivers able to afford a race seat after WW11, replaced by paid drivers with the ability to raise sponsorship.
The late 60`s and 70`s brought high wings which kept growing smaller until the discovery of underbody aerodynamics that by the 80`s produced so much downforce that cars would porpoise along the straights. Composite cars became the vogue when NASA developments showed the way new composite materials can be used. A phase of active suspension, automatic gearboxes and antilock brakes, plus clever innovations that produced high down force! All gone, banned. Now we have hybrid F1 cars which apart from the lack of multi cylinder engine noise are the highest level of technical achievement. Today`s F1 cars have developed into incredible technical masterpieces, with engineering supported by major auto manufacturers
It is not as if the Principality has not changed, much of the land in Fontville was reclaimed from the ocean in 1970 and condominiums, harbors, a soccer stadium, hotels, the Heliport, and Princes Auto Collection have replaced the Med. New hotels have increased the rooms available
Grand Prix Tours has operated tours to the Monaco Grand Prix for over 30 years and have experienced all the problems you can have. You can look on a map that shows a grandstand within easy reach - because of road closures it will take you 50 minutes to get there by foot, unless you know about the tunnels that will shorten your walk to a few minutes. All the GP Tours staff has experienced the Monaco Grand Prix over 20 times. They know how to get to the Old Town in a few minutes, or the Casino by boat and elevator in five minutes flat.
Fairmont Hotel Monte Carlo
The Fairmont Monte Carlo, located across from the Casino and sprawled over a sea-side cliff, is one of Europe`s premier resorts. An ideal place to stay during the Grand Prix weekend as it is located directly on the circuit and all guests have access to the rooftop viewing area. Beautiful guest rooms have large private balconies, marbled bathrooms, air conditioning, telephones, mini bars, safes and satellite TV. Nobu, the hotel`s restaurant, serves both traditional Japanese cuisine and South American specialties. The Saphir 24, lounge and champagne bar, is open 24 hours a day. The beautiful rooftop pool is heated and offers unparallel views of the Mediterranean Sea from the sundeck. Guests are invited to use the Willow Stream Spa, which has a fitness center and offers a variety of beauty treatments.
Extra night prices include breakfast.
Monaco is the second smallest country in the world with the highest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita with the most expensive real estate anywhere. The only industries of any consequence are gambling and tourism. The casino was not an immediate success. It was the arrival of the railway, and changing the name from "The Den of Thieves" to "Monte Carlo" that brought immediate wealth to the Principality.
The Princes palace is on the rock known as Monaco-Ville, the old city on a rocky promontory extending into the Mediterranean. The Grimaldi families have Genovese nobility roots, and laid claim to Monaco in 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi, known as "Il Malizia" (Malicious One") dressed as a Franciscan Monk and lead his army into the castle. For nearly eight hundred years they have fought, bought, negotiated protection, or were given Monaco by the nobles of France and Italy, and more recently by a treaty after the WWII.
In 1970 the reclaimed land in Fontvieille became a newly constructed area of mostly condominiums. It is an area just the other side of the rock where many of the Formula One drivers have residences for tax protection. The helicopter airport is there as is the soccer stadium, port of Fontvieille, and the prince`s auto museum.
The Monaco grand prix takes place in La Condamine, around Port Hercules and the Monte Carlo sections of Monaco. It is said that Hercules visited the port in ancient times and the port was named after his visit, others say it is myth. The F1 circuit starts along Boulevard Albert 1er then uphill to the Casino and Hotel de Paris complex, it goes down to where the old station used to be then through the Fairmont tunnel. Exiting close to the chicane and going around the port section back to the start/finish line.
The circuit is generally recognized to be less safe than other circuits used for Formula One. If it were not already an existing Grand Prix it would more than likely not be permitted to be added to the Formula One schedule, for safety reasons.
Race tickets are not included with your hotel package. Please check the "Race Tickets" tab for ticket options.
