Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix alternated between Mosport Park and Circuit Mont-Tremblant and moved to Montreal after both were considered unsafe. Ile Notre Dame was chosen and there was great interest in a new Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve.

Gilles Villeneuve drove the number 27 Ferrari. He did not know the meaning of losing; he would keep going no matter what car problems he was having. Phil Hill once told me a story about waiting for Gilles with Enzo Ferrari at Fiorano. Gilles was flying his new helicopter to show it off to Enzo. They waited and waited, until Phil saw an exhausted man riding a bicycle. It turned out to be Gilles who had crash landed his helicopter in a field and borrowed the farmer`s old bike so as not to be too late. It was his way he always fought to the last.

Niki Lauda said of him: "He was the craziest devil I ever came across in Formula 1... The fact that, for all this, he was a sensitive and lovable character rather than an out-and-out hell-raiser made him such a unique human being". There was the time he banged wheels with Rene Arnoux over the final three laps of the 1979 French Grand Prix, the most exciting F1 action I`ve ever seen. Gilles was like the Black Knight in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie. Fighting King Arthur the Black Knight fights on after losing both arms and legs. This could have been Gilles.

At the San Marino Grand Prix he had agreed with his team mate not to pass in the early part of the race. However Didier Pironi didn`t keep his word and there was an intense argument after the race. The next race was at Zolder for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. Gilles was on pole only to lose the position to Pironi late in qualifying. Giles jumped in his car to win it back only to run into the back of Jochen Mass at 140 mph. He died and racing lost a wonderful person. Such was Gilles popularity and the fact that he won the very first Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, they named the track after him in `82.

The track in Montreal came about because they were getting ready for the Canadian World Expo and were building an underground rail system to connect the underground city to hotels and transport the Expo visitors. There was nowhere to put the ground they took out for the underground railway so they put it in the St Lawrence and built Ills Notre Dame for the future World Expo and later the race track.

Montreal`s popularity in June is easy to understand. The Province of Quebec is waking up from a long cold winter and the whole population comes out to celebrate in the spring like conditions. They are full of life particularly during the week of the Canadian Grand Prix. The whole city is alive until the early morning; some miss practice due to celebrating too much. Many streets are closed down for the revelers where concerts and auto displays abound.

Montreal

With the advent of the fairly new Metro system it may not have struck you how it developed. Montreal built an Underground City in 1962 to allow respite from the cold and access to shopping. It became a vast network of pedestrian walkways below the city. There are 20 miles of connecting passageways beneath downtown. Approximately 500,000 people circulate daily on this network, where some 2,000 shops and restaurants, ten major hotels, museums, theaters and universities can be found

As the underground city grew so did the Metro and by 2004 Montreal had linked the Metro to the underground city. For most Montrealers, however, it tends to be considered more as a large mall complex linking Metro stations - they may not even know they are in it.

When spring arrives it is like ground hog day as Montreals inhabitants come out from their underground city. By June the streets are full twenty four hours a day. Streets all over town are closed from traffic to allow the revellers the freedom of the streets and city. Crescent street is if full of excitement as is old Montreal and many others.

Race tickets are not included with your hotel package. Please check the "Race Tickets" tab for ticket options.

As the Canadian Grand Prix at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit is located on the island and parking is extremely limited, it is best to take the metro. Travel time varies between 10-15 minutes from each downtown hotel. Please allow plenty of time to walk to your grandstand from the metro station Jean Drapeau.

Transfer times may vary, due to the Canadian Grand Prix traffic and weather conditions.

F1 Driver Hosted Party

As if enjoying a Formula 1 race with a backdrop of Montreal is not enough, we bring you our F1 Driver Party hosted by a race celebrity. Drinks and dinner are included.

An event not to be missed!

Our Guest: F1 Driver Charles Leclerc

He may be a rookie on the 2018 grid, but Charles Leclerc`s single-seater credentials are impressive. GP3 champion in 2016; F2 champion in 2017; Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) member; F1 testing experience with Ferrari; and F1 practice outings with both Haas and Sauber.

Born in 1997, Leclerc is barely into his twenties, so it`s fair to say he looks to be firmly on the fast track to success. In 2016, he became an FDA member and got his first taste of F1 machinery - a day`s testing at Silverstone with Ferrari and no less than four FP1 practice sessions with Haas. More importantly, he carried on winning - three times en route to the GP3 title in his rookie season.
In 2017, there were further F1 tests with the Scuderia, and another four Friday practice outings, this time with the Ferrari-powered Sauber team.

With Sauber strengthening their ties to Ferrari with an Alfa Romeo title sponsorship deal for 2018, Leclerc won his first F1 race seat, driving alongside seasoned Swede Marcus Ericsson, and finished an impressive 6th place in Baku this year.

Our Host: Karun Chandhok

We are excited to bring you a new host for Grand Prix Tours, Karun Chandhok.

A multiple race winner and podium finisher in GP2, Karun was a test driver for the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team in 2007 and 2008, before going on to race in Formula 1 for Hispania Racing and Team Lotus in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Since 2012, he has been competing in Sportscars, finishing in the top 6 in class at Le Mans in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Karun also joined Mahindra Racing for the all new Formula E series, in 2014-2015.

Karun was born into a motor racing family where his father, grandfather and even grandmother used to race! After winning the Indian National Championship on debut in 2000, he won the Formula Asia Championship in 2001 before moving to England where he was a front-runner in Formula 3. Karun went back to Asia and won the Asian Renault V6 series in 2006, which served as a launch pad up to GP2 and then Formula 1.

More recently he worked with Sky Sports F1 in the UK and BeIN Sports in Qatar and in 2016 joined the team at Channel 4 in the UK for their Formula 1 broadcast. He is a regular columnist for the world`s leading motorsport magazine, Autosport
