Monaco Grand Prix
1976

The number of cars seen at the Monaco Grand Prix was reduced from previous years since only twenty cars were allowed to start and twenty-five to enter. Mario Andretti was absent from the race since he was at Indianapolis and Lotus only brought one car. Brett Lunger had to sit out because his car was sold to Henri Pescarolo's team and he was awaiting a new car. The second Fittipaldi car was also out of the race.

Niki Lauda qualified ahead of Clay Regazzoni making the front row a Ferrari affair. Ronnie Peterson was in the second row next to Patrick Depailler in his six-wheeler. Lauda started with the lead and Peterson was able to bump back Regazzoni. At the back of the field Reutemann had a collision with Alan Jones at Ste Devote and both were forced to exit the race. The Monaco Grand Prix remained incident free for the most part until mid-race Hunt had a spin out at the Tabac and was pushed to the back of the field and then followed it with an engine failure. Oil left behind from Hunt's car ended up causing Regazzoni's car to spin and dropped him back two cars. A lap after Regazzoni's incident Peterson hit the oil slick and spun into the barriers.

Lauda finished the Monaco Grand Prix in front and Scheckter behind him in second. Third place wasn't as clean as the two front runners since Depailler gave it up during the last couple of laps to Regazzoni only to have Regazzoni crash out on the seventy-fourth lap. Everyone had thought that Depailler's Tyrrell P34 six wheeler was a joke in the last race but he proved that it was no joke by taking third.
