1972
Two weeks after the race in Spain the Monaco Grand Prix was ready to go. The field looked much of the same with the exception of Mario Andretti being absent. Reutemann was still missing as well due to his ankle and the Fittipaldi brothers were back in action. Peter Revson was also missing and was substituted with Brian Redman. A couple of changes to the track had been made for this years Monaco Grand Prix. The pit lane was now moved by the chicane with the track going straight down from the tunnel to a new chicane. The new obstacle became a problem for the racers since they found out that only one car could negotiate it at a time. The track also now hosted 25 cars to start.
Emerson Fittipaldi took the pole position on the grid with Jacky Ickx next to him. Behind them were Regazzoni and Beltoise. The conditions on the track were bad for racing since it was raining heavily on Saturday and throughout the race. Fittipaldi was able to take the lead at the beginning but before completing one lap, Regazzoni took to the escape road at the chicane taking Fittipaldi and Ickx with him. By the time they got back on the track Ickx had jumped ahead of the other two and Beltoise had taken the lead. Almost every lap at the Monaco Grand Prix, someone was spinning out or making some sort of mistake since the super-wide tires could not cope with the conditions.
Beltoise ended up taking home his first and only Grand Prix victory. He was followed home by Ickx and Fittipaldi. Regazzoni had spun on some oil and hit the barriers earlier and lost his place to Stewart who then lost his place to Fittipaldi.
