1962
The weather was not as favorable as drivers would've liked for the Monaco Grand Prix, but the race went on as scheduled. The sky was overcast, the track was damp and practice was disrupted by rain. The race was expected to be a fight between Graham Hill's BRM and Jim Clark in the new Lotus 25 cars but there were surprises waiting in the race.
Jim Clark took pole position in his Lotus with Graham Hill in second and Bruce McLaren in third. In the second row was Willy Mairesse in a Ferrari and Dan Gurney for Porsche. At the start of the race Mairesse tried to take the lead. He almost lost control allowing Hill and McLaren to shoot forward to the front while Clark was caught behind in chaos. Ginther was not able to avoid the out of control cars and slammed into Trintignant and Ireland. Gurney's Porsche and Taylor's factory Lotus were also involved in the crash but were both able to rejoin. McLaren held his lead for the first six laps until Graham Hill caught him.
Later Clark would make a leap forward past McLaren but then ran into gearbox trouble. On lap fifty-five Clark retired with a broken clutch. Graham Hill led for a good section of the Monaco Grand Prix before engine problems started to rise and he realized he had a misfire. McLaren came back to the lead at the ninety-third lap and finished in first. Phil Hill finished a close second, with Bandini in third.
