Monaco Grand Prix
1936

Mercedes-Benz new driver, Monegasque Louis Chiron took the pole position for the 1936 Monaco Grand Prix.. Tazio Nuvolari was remarkable by being in second ahead of the rest of the Silver Arrows. Auto Union had brought the most recent version of the V16 which now produced 520 bhp for Hans Stuck, Bernd Rosemeyer and Archille Varzi

On race day, torrential rain lashed down as the cars lined up on the grid. In a cloud of spray, Caracciola, nicknamed "The Regenmeister" for his prowess in rainy conditions, took the lead at the start, with Nuvolari, Chiron and Rosemeyer close behind. At the chicane, the Alfa of Tadini dropped pool of oil that spread quickly on the wet suface. On lap 2 the third place Mercedes of Chiron crashed into the chicane followed by Rosemeyer who spun out blocking the exit of the Chicane. There were cars going in every direction and von Brauchitsch ran into the rear of Farinas Alfa Romeo. The 'Williams' Bugatti would lose several laps and Siena's Maserati was out of the race. Trossi's works Maserati had also been involved as had Brivo's Alfa. The following lap Tadini spun out on his own oil, which was really poetic justice.

The race continued with Caracciola leading from Nuvolari, Rosemeyer, Varzi, Stuck and Fagioli. Rosemeyer dropped back after a pit stop, and Fagioli crashed at the chicane on lap nine. This was the third works Mercedes-Benz to crash at the chicane leaving only Caracciola to carry Mercedes honor. But even the regenmeister could not hold a charging Nuvolari who passed Caracciola and started to pull away. Rosemeyer crashed across from the Hotel de Paris and the order was Nuvolari leading Caracciola, Varzi, Stuck, Wimille, Étancelin, Brivio and Trossi.

Nuvolari's car developed brake problems and he dropped to fourth place behind Caracciola's Mercedes and Varzi's and Stuck's Auto Unions. After some fifty laps the Auto Unions and Alfas came in for fuel. Caracciola, however was on a non-stop race strategy, that meant that the victory chances for the rest were over unless Caracciola made a mistake. So three years after the qualifying accident that nearly ended his career, Rudi Caracciola won the Monaco Grand Prix with the two Auto Unions of Varzi and Stuck sharing the podium. Nuvolari brought the brakeless Alfa home fourth.
